Being the person who can always carry more can feel like evidence that you are leading well. Your team depends on you, the work keeps moving, and the standard stays high. But responsibility can quietly turn into control. When every decision comes back to you, capable people learn to wait. When you fix every problem before anyone else feels its weight, the team never builds the strength to solve the next one.
Handing over ownership is not lowering the standard. It is making the standard teachable. Name what good looks like, give someone a real decision to hold, and stay close enough to coach without taking the work back. Expect a learning curve. Growth needs room to be slightly less efficient before it becomes sustainable.
A team can only grow to the edge of what its leader is willing to release. The question is not whether you can keep carrying it. The question is who your people could become if you stopped.
